While the Chinese mainland maintains its leadership in Chinese Medicine research through sheer volume, there is clear evidence of growing international engagement and improving research quality across different regions.

Over the past 10 years, more than 0.2 million articles have been published in the Chinese Medicine field, involving 188 countries or regions worldwide.

The Chinese mainland dominates Chinese Medicine research, producing nearly three-quarters of all publications, while other Asian countries and Western nations demonstrate growing engagement and improving research impact in this field.

The Chinese mainland’s output surged from 45,927 publications (2014–2018) to 106,497 (2019–2023), with FWCI rising from 1.06 to 1.20 and the share of top 10% cited publications increasing from 15.1% to 15.7%.

At the institutional level, Chinese universities and research organisations lead the field, with Shanghai University of Chinese Medicine and Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine each producing over 10,000 publications.

Outside of the Chinese mainland, institutions from Macao SAR (China), Hong Kong SAR (China), and Taiwan (China) have demonstrated strong research impact, particularly notable in their FWCI and shares of highly cited publications.
