Across the Asia region, academics continue to research age-old local scholarly disciplines, many of which have been modernised. In some instances, the impact of such research is experienced daily by millions of people within our communities. Yet, there is limited global awareness and understanding of these disciplines. Further, these disciplines are not widely recognised by the international higher education and research establishment.

That’s about to change.

Elsevier, in collaboration with Hong Kong Baptist University, is developing a data and analytics approach to internationalise regional and local scholarly disciplines by exploring its application to the traditional discipline of Chinese Medicine. The objective is to enable researchers and their institutions to benefit from the strength of these disciplines globally, lifting their international reputation and increasing opportunities for collaboration. The project has the potential to unlock local innovation and support new economic endeavours.

This regional awareness reflects an emerging concept: the “fourth-generation university,” which strongly focuses on societal impact and regional development through education, research, and innovation. The concept is in step with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), addressing urgent global health concerns and promoting sustainable healthcare practices. As the world’s researchers seek solutions to global challenges, there are increasing calls for “bottom-up” knowledge and insights.

Local meets global at this QS APAC workshop. Learn about this innovative project and join a workshop challenge to consider your regional research strengths and the potential to establish globally recognised disciplines.
